I am currently representing a leading NHS organisation in need of a Director of Applications, who will report directly into the CIO. The Director of Applications will be a member of the Informatics Senior Management Team. Within this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the enterprise-wide applications strategy, collaborating with other team members, and will select, decommission, and leverage applications and systems for the entire organisation. The role will also be responsible for creating policies that determine the necessary systems and will be accountable for all applications and systems and related services ensuring highly functional and integrated solutions. 

IR35 Status: Outside
Duration: 6 Months (high possibility of extension)
Location: North-West, Hybrid
Rate: Band 9, Negotiable 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with business owners and provides strategic direction for the applications portfolio that aligns with business strategy and helps move the organisation to the next level.
  • Manages all aspects of applications and systems implementations to meet customer expectations and maintain a high level of quality through communications, customer service, and organisational practices.
  • Supports and delivers interface and integration solutions in collaboration with other Informatics teams as necessary. Coordinates among the various teams within Informatics on systems development, project management, testing, implementation, and support
  • Establishes collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, administrators, technical staff, consultants, and vendors.
  • Oversees integration/collaboration with applications maintained outside of Informatics.
  • Leads the successful implementation and adoption of Epic as the primary integrated EPR solution and supports the Informatics planning for all new and expanded clinical facilities.
  • Oversees optimal system performance of applications related to legal and regulatory reporting requirements, meaningful use criteria and milestones.
  • In collaboration with the Hospital Chief Clinical Information Officers and CNIO, positions enterprise systems for population health, ongoing participation in clinically integrated networks, and other new models of care initiatives.
  • In conjunction with Procurement, negotiates and maintains vendor contracts for purchase and maintenance of software applications and related services.
  • Serves as a key organisational contact for application software vendors, ensuring the organisation is aware of and prepared for changes in technology.
  • In conjunction with the Technology team, maintains an ongoing inventory of software licenses purchased and applications maintained.
  • Continually reviews the current applications portfolio for new technologies and improvements needed.
  • Continually scans the market to identify and recommend new software solutions to enhance operations, efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Extensive experience in healthcare IT including 3-5 years management at senior level.
  • In-depth professional and specialist knowledge relating to Informatics, acquired through training and experience over an extended period.
  • Must have a proven track record of successfully leading a large and complex applications support and development service, including a large EPR, preferably Epic.
  • Ability to provide, receive and present complex, sensitive or contentious information to a large group, in an atmosphere of proposed change and involving negotiation and diplomacy where developed persuasive, motivational, negotiation, training, empathic or re-assurance skills are required.
  • Ability to analyse performance of area of activity in relation to performance targets, strategic objectives; develop strategies, business plans, advice in areas where expert opinions differs and where there may be no precedent.
  • Extensive experience managing capital and revenue budgets.
