So, you think you can be a recruiter?

blog

We’re not only recruiting the best IT and tech talent out there – we’re also recruiting the best recruiters out there! As Evolution Recruitment Solutions continues to grow, we’re always looking out for outstanding recruitment consultants, regardless of their level of experience. Do you think you have what it takes to be a recruiter? Let’s see.

What makes a successful recruitment consultant?

A successful recruiter is someone who understands a company’s recruitment needs, identifies the right candidates to fill those needs and coordinates a recruitment process that results in a long and enjoyable employment relationship for everyone involved.

To achieve that, you need the following skills and qualities:

Relationship skills

Five-star recruitment consultants are those who maintain positive client and candidate relationships that span years, companies and positions. What do we mean by relationship skills?

  • Rapport – you build a personal connection with clients and candidates so they come to you for advice, opinions or even a friendly chat;
  • Communication – you persuade clients about potential hires, calm anyone’s pre-interview nerves and gently handle any rejections or feedback;
  • Network – you create strong networks spanning all specialisms and industry subsectors; and
  • Reputation – you uphold your own and your agency's reputation as the best IT recruitment specialist out there.

Attention to detail

A recruitment consultant never forgets. From a client’s favourite coffee to a candidate’s specialist skills – you remember the details that matter and use those to match active and passive candidates to the perfect IT job vacancies. You also notice the little things that make a difference, such as a candidate’s suitability for a certain culture, a client’s policies that might sway a passive candidate and a contractor’s up and coming contract expiry.

A finger on the pulse

The recruitment landscape is forever changing, especially in the IT industry. To make it big in the world of IT recruitment, you’ll need to keep up-to-date with the latest news, technologies and skills by reading IT recruitment blogs, attending tech events and following industry leaders on LinkedIn

Not only does this help you to understand your clients and candidates, but it also enables you to predict the IT recruitment landscape and recruit for the skills today, that will be in demand tomorrow.

An appetite for the challenging

Unfillable positions, talent shortages and recruitment crises – nothing will phase you. You love working under pressure and producing results, even in the most difficult of situations. You know where potential candidates are hanging out in real life and on the web, and you have the confidence to engage new clients, source new candidates and create a recruitment buzz.

An inquisitive nature

Nothing gets past you. You ask the right questions and seek the right answers about everything, from the nitty-gritty of the role and the true company culture, to a candidate’s preferred working style and job-changing motivators. This enables you to present an irresistible selection of talented candidates to your clients and exciting roles to your candidates.

A commitment to lifelong learning

And last, but definitely not least, you’ll need to practice what you preach and undertake regular professional development. You learn about the latest recruitment trends, embrace the newest HR technologies and attend conferences and workshops to improve your sourcing and sifting skills.
