The Importance of Stepping Outside your Technical Comfort Zone

"A lot of times you will get stuck in a very stagnant position if you stay at the same place and you notice that you're not seeing growth opportunities and you're not seeing an opportunity for you to learn new things. In that case, don't be afraid to get out there. Get on LinkedIn and look for another gig. Reach out to folks who are in the recruiting space."

That’s why we’re excited to bring you this interview with Parag Shah, the Senior Director of Data Architecture at Rocket Software. With over two decades of experience in the data space, Parag has a wealth of knowledge and insights to share about his career, the challenges he’s faced and his advice for the next generation of data talent. So without further ado, let’s dive into our interview with Parag Shah and gain a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in the tech industry.

In this article, we sit down with Parag Shah, the Senior Director of Data Architecture at Rocket Software. Rocket Software is a privately owned company part of the Bain Capital portfolio and Parag has been with the company for three years now.

Parag has an impressive background in the data space, with over 23 years of experience. He started his career as a computer operator intern at Syratech and quickly moved up the ranks from a junior developer to a data engineer, and eventually into a leadership role.

I’ve been in the data space for the last 23 years,” says Parag. “I got into the database and lucked into the data space, and stayed in it. I started as a developer and worked my way through the different stages of being a data engineer or a data developer throughout my career and then moved down the leadership track.”

Parag’s journey in the tech industry began when he was just 19 years old, during a summer internship at Syratech. “It was my first summer out of college and I started as a computer operator intern” he recalls. “At the end of the summer, they asked me to stay on full time, so I took the job and that’s where I started in the data space.

After only six months as a full-time employee, Parag was offered the role of manager of the computer room. He accepted the position and went on to manage the computer room, marking the beginning of his journey as a leader in the tech industry.

Don’t Look at Leaders, Look at Up-and-Comers

In the fast-paced world of technology, it’s important to stay ahead of the curve and stay ahead of the competition. One way to do this is by focusing on new and upcoming tools, instead of simply following established leaders in the industry. This was a lesson that Parag learned early on in his career and one that has led to his success.

When Parag was asked to branch out and investigate why so many companies were adopting new tools like Snowflake and Looker, he realised the potential. Through conversations with representatives from these companies, he began to understand the value they provided and how they differed from legacy providers in the space – and the cost-savings that can be made early on.

Now at Rocket Software, Parag has implemented a modern data stack that includes tools like Snowflake and Looker. He emphasizes the benefits of being an early adopter of new tools, as this can lead to better renewal rates and concessions from the companies.

Moving Out of Your Comfort Zone and Taking Control of Your Career

Throughout his career, Parag has continually stepped out of his comfort zone and looked to work with new and exciting tech.

Parag’s career emphasizes the importance of taking control of your own career and not being afraid to pursue new opportunities. He suggests using LinkedIn to network and connect with people in the industry, including recruiters. By keeping an eye out for new opportunities, you can continue to grow and develop professionally.

A lot of times you will get stuck in a very stagnant position if you stay at the same place and you notice that you’re not seeing growth opportunities and you’re not seeing an opportunity for you to learn new things. In that case, don’t be afraid to get out there. Get on LinkedIn and look for another gig. Reach out to folks who are in the recruiting space.

This advice from Parag is valuable for anyone starting out in their career, especially in the fast-paced and ever-evolving tech industry. It’s important to keep learning, growing, and seeking new challenges in order to advance your career and reach your professional goals.

The Importance of Mentorship and Overcoming the ‘Two-Year’ Stigma

Parag also spoke about the stigma surrounding job hopping, particularly in the tech industry. “There’s a stigma out there that you have to stay somewhere for two years or something like that,” he said. “And I hope that stigma doesn’t really exist as much as it used to.

Despite this, Parag believes it’s important for those in leadership positions to be mentors and provide guidance for those starting their careers. “It’s our job not only to be leaders, but it’s also our job to be mentors” he said. “We need to give the folks who are just coming into their career or at the junior level or the mid-level the opportunity to learn, grow and develop professionally.

By taking on a mentorship role, those in leadership positions can help the next generation of tech professionals succeed and reach their full potential. Mentorship not only benefits those starting out in their careers but can also benefit the mentor as they gain a fresh perspective and continue to grow and develop in their own role.
