The DevOps stats that will influence your next career move

blog

As you know from our previous blog, DevOps is flourishing. And, in an era where some IT job seekers are concerned about the automation of their roles, it’s exciting to see a new career path blossom. At Evolution Recruitment Solutions, we’re already seeing a demand in companies recruiting for DevOps engineers in the UK, and we anticipate this to be one of the most in-demand roles over the coming year. For those of you on the outside looking in with interest, we’ve gathered some interesting DevOps job statistics that will influence your next career move.

1. Salary

It might not be the main reason that IT professionals move into DevOps positions, but the salaries influenced by the high in-demand status of DevOps roles certainly sweetens the deal. The average salary for DevOps jobs including London is £62,500, and £52,500 outside of the big city. These impressive figures make DevOps one of the highest paying tech jobs of 2018 and is attracting many to the profession.

2. Job satisfaction

More important than the salary – for most – is job satisfaction, and IT practitioners won’t be disappointed. DevOps jobs were recently awarded the second-best job category in Glassdoor’s annual 50 best jobs survey report. Considering the number of job openings, average salary and overall job satisfaction, DevOps was awarded silver place scoring 4.8 and 4.2 out of 5 on job score and job satisfaction respectively. For IT job seekers searching for a more fulfilling role, DevOps definitely meets this criterion.

3. Increasing opportunities

The number of DevOps opportunities is highly attractive for IT professionals. According to IT Jobs Watch, DevOps has climbed 17 places in job popularity over the past twelve months, with 13,643 job openings. That’s 8% of all permanent IT jobs.

50% of organisations are now implementing DevOps to achieve higher performance through agility and speed, and this is happening across all industries. The sectors at the forefront are healthcare, banking, insurance and manufacturing, providing a wide range of opportunities for IT candidates. While some of those businesses experimenting with this new role are using single pilots and departments, many are proceeding to a business model that sees DevOps implemented across and throughout the entire organisation.

4. Increasing awareness

You only have to look at Google search to see the increasing awareness of DevOps and the rising demand for the profession.

DevOps terms increased from 16% in 2014 to 27% this year, making DevOps an IT sector in itself. There are more than 100 different conferences dedicated to the practice and with rising awareness comes more job opportunities.

5. London calling

DevOps jobs in London are plentiful, with the city having the highest amount of DevOps job opportunities. Closely following is the North of England, as businesses increasingly look to reduce their operational staff and move that headcount into DevOps positions in the UK. At Evolution Recruitment Solutions, we have seen a rise in DevOps jobs across the UK, in and out of the major cities.

6. Skills in-demand

For those IT job seekers wondering if their current skillset is suitable for a career in DevOps, recent research shows that over the past six months, employers have increasingly been searching for:

  • Agile software development
  • Amazon AWS

  • Microsoft Azure
