Should I write my resume in present tense or past tense?

blog

You are probably familiar with these guidelines:

Past jobs: Use only past tense

Current jobs: Use mostly present tense

However, many candidates become unsure when they are writing about past work accomplishments and completed projects for their current jobs. When in doubt, follow these:

  • Everyday responsibilities: Use present tense (because you are still doing those tasks)
  • Completed projects/past accomplishments: Use past tense

Most importantly, you should be consistent with the tenses. If you are still unsure, you may get a resume evaluation from resume writing experts.

A final note, remember to check your tenses when you update your resume with a new position. Your resume should be advancing with you as you move up the career ladder.
