Based on Glassdoor’s data, the most in-demand tech role is software engineers. There were 210 open software engineering jobs in January 2019, and they pay an estimated median base pay of S$8,253 per month.
According to Payscale, the average salary for a software engineer in Singapore is S$49,987 per year. This is based on information collected from 898 respondents, with salary ranging from S$32,441 to S$84,669 and bonuses ranging from S$1,702 to S$15,875.
Indeed, a job portal, estimates that the average salary of software engineers in Singapore is S$3,614 per month. This figure is accurate as of 30 January 2019 and is based on data from 161 software engineers.
The wide salary range for software engineers is due to a number of factors:
Seniority and job scope
The more senior and experienced the software engineer, the more salary he/she is able to command. Salary increase also happens when a software engineer progresses to a leadership role.
Industry
Some industries pay more than others. For example, a software engineer in the finance industry is likely to be paid more than a software engineer in the education industry, for the same job scope and seniority level.
Company’s funding
Generally, a company that is better funded would be in a better position to provide higher salary.
Specialty
According to LinkedIn, software engineers can be categorised into 6 areas. Salaries are determined by the demand and supply levels of software engineers in each area. At the moment, Machine Learning and Data Science Engineers are paid the most due to their high demand and short supply.
